I used to think that when I grew up and had money, I’d buy ALL the gadgets and gizmos. 🤖✨
I was going to live in THE FUTURE.
Everything would be electric. Everything would be smart. Everything would be automated.
Why perform a basic human movement when a small motor can do it for you? 💁♀️
Then adulthood happened.
🌍 SAVE THE PLANET.
💷 THE COST OF LIVING IS INSANE.
⚡ HAVE YOU SEEN THE PRICE OF ELECTRICITY?
🗑️ ALSO PLEASE STOP BUYING SO MUCH CRAP.
Right. Okay then. 😐
So now whenever I see some exciting new powered gadget, I have to ask myself:
Will this actually make my life better, or have we just put a battery in something that worked perfectly well before? 🤨
I have three rooms where the lights can be controlled by remote.
When I first got them I was DELIGHTED.
💜 PURPLE!
💙 BLUE!
❤️ RED!
🌅 SUNSET!
✨ DIMMED MOOD LIGHTING!
LOOK, THE LIVING ROOM IS MAGENTA.
Technology! 🤩
Fast-forward a few months:
🚶♀️ Walk into room.
👆 Press light switch.
💡 Light comes on.
Revolutionary.
Turns out the Victorians or whoever invented the light switch had pretty much nailed it. 😂
And now I see gadgets everywhere that solve problems I genuinely didn’t know I had.
Electric salt grinder.
Was twisting it becoming too physically demanding? 🧂
Automatic soap dispenser.
Apparently pushing the little pump down was eating into my day. 🧼
Wi-Fi kettle.
Because God forbid I walk INTO THE KITCHEN to make the tea I’m going to have to walk into the kitchen to collect anyway. 🫖📱
And everything needs charging.
My phone needs charging.
My watch needs charging.
My headphones need charging.
My toothbrush needs charging.
I absolutely refuse to reach a point in civilisation where I can’t season my chips because the pepper mill is on 2%. 🔋🌶️
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE technology.
Give me something that genuinely saves time, removes an annoying chore or makes life noticeably better and I’m IN. 🙌
But now I have a rule:
Once the novelty wears off, what will I actually use this for?
Because if the answer is “exactly the same thing my existing £4 object already does, except this one has Bluetooth”…
I’m keeping the £4 object. 😂
Maybe the future isn’t owning a gadget for absolutely everything.
Maybe it’s finally realising that not everything needs an app, a remote control, a lithium battery and sixteen million colour options.
Sometimes…
